Schengen Airport Transit Visa from UAE: Rules, Exemptions & How to Apply

What is an Airport Transit Visa (ATV)?

An Airport Transit Visa (Type A) allows nationals of certain countries to pass through the international transit area of a Schengen airport on their way to a non-Schengen destination. It does NOT allow you to leave the transit area or enter Schengen territory.

Who Needs One?

Citizens of countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Syria typically require an ATV when transiting through Schengen airports.

Individual Schengen states can extend this requirement to additional nationalities, so always check the specific country of transit.

Common Exemptions

You are generally exempt if you hold a valid Schengen visa or residence permit, a US, Canadian, UK, Japanese, or EU residence permit, or a diplomatic passport. Holders of valid long-stay visas from EU member states also qualify for exemption.

Documents for ATV Application

Passport, completed application form, recent photo, confirmed onward ticket to a non-Schengen country, visa for the final destination (if required), proof of UAE residence, and travel insurance covering the transit.

How to Apply from the UAE

Submit your application at the VFS/BLS centre of the airline's transit country (e.g. France for Paris CDG, Germany for Frankfurt). Processing usually takes 5–15 working days. Apply at least 3 weeks before your travel date.
