Understanding the Two Visa Systems
A Schengen visa is a single short-stay permit that grants entry into 29 European countries that have abolished internal border checks. For UAE residents, this means one application, one fee, and the freedom to move between member states for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
The UK visa is a completely separate system. After Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer part of the Schengen Area, so a Schengen sticker does not allow entry into England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. You need a dedicated UK visitor visa for that.
Application Process Compared
For a Schengen visa from the UAE, you apply through the consulate or VFS/BLS centre of the country you will spend the most time in, or your first port of entry. Biometrics are mandatory for first-time applicants every five years.
For a UK visa, you apply online through the UK government portal, pay the fee, and book a biometric appointment at a UK VAC in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The decision is usually returned within 15 working days for standard service.
Fees, Duration and Validity
Schengen visa fees for adults are €90, with a maximum stay of 90 days in any 180-day window. Multiple-entry visas of up to 5 years are issued to frequent, low-risk travelers.
A UK standard visitor visa costs around £127 for 6 months and can be issued for 2, 5, or 10 years with each visit capped at 6 months.
Which One Should You Choose?
If your trip covers cities like Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, or Barcelona, the Schengen visa is the right call. If London, Edinburgh, or Manchester is on your itinerary, you need a separate UK visa.
Travelers visiting both regions on the same trip should apply for both visas in parallel and align the travel dates with the validity of each sticker.
